With the addition of guitarist Steve Vai, the band's sound became more technical and heavy. Tracks such as the title track "Slip of the Tongue" combine Coverdale's powerful vocals with Vai's virtuoso technique to create a powerful impact. This album is an important representative of the hard rock scene of the late '80s.
