シングルリカットされた楽曲も多い、捨て曲無しのアルバム。
1979年リリースの2nd.アルバム。デビュー作である『TOTO／宇宙の騎士』よりもRockバンドとしての本領発揮した作品。Hard Rockにアプローチした楽曲も収録。
アルバムには、ハードロック系の楽曲も収録されており、特に「ホワイト・シスター」や「オール・アス・ボーイズ」は注目されています。また、シングル曲「99」は、ジョージ・ルーカスの処女作である映画『THX 1138』を元に作られました1。 本作収録曲で『99』、『St. George and the Dragon』、タイトル曲である『Hydra』、『All Us Boys』、『White Sister』はB面ではあるが、シングルリカット。本作でTOTOの方向性を見出したといってもよい作品。
