カラヤンがベルリン・フィルを率いて描いた『春の祭典』は、精緻な統率と響きのコントロールにより、野性味と構築性を兼ね備えた演奏として知られる。力強くも理性的な表現が特徴。
カラヤンはこの作品を単なる原始主義の象徴としてではなく、緻密に構築された現代音楽として捉えている。ベルリン・フィルのアンサンブルは極めて精密で、リズムの暴力性が統制の中に昇華されている。管弦の響きは透明でありながらも厚みがあり、音の動的エネルギーが常に流動する。混沌の中に秩序を見出す解釈はカラヤンならではで、全体の構成感と緊張感の維持が見事。ストラヴィンスキーの革新性を音響芸術として再構築した名演といえる。
