A turning point in R&B that marked a maturity beyond boyhood.

With the growth of the band members, the group evolved from idol-like elements into a full-fledged R&B group with this self-titled album. Produced by Michael Stinton, the group developed a groove-focused sound.

This important album marked a transition to a more rhythm-driven R&B sound while retaining pop elements. The group's harmonies deepened, and the strength of the lead vocals and the smoothness of the choruses stood out. The light rhythm of "Cool It Now" and the melody line of "Mr. Telephone Man" exude urban sophistication, laying the groundwork for later New Jack Swing. The sound production is crystal clear, making this album a symbol of the evolution of '80s R&B.
