A moving re-recording in which the greatest contemporary cellist explores the depths of Bach with his mature interpretation.
This is a collection of unaccompanied works re-recorded by Yo-Yo Ma, one of the leading contemporary cellists, as the core of a cross-arts project he undertook in collaboration with the video project "Inspired by Bach." It is a work imbued with deep concentration and warm tones.
This re-recording brings to fruition the essence of Bach's unaccompanied works, which Yo-Yo Ma has been working on for many years, in a softer, more introspective form. Compared to the previous recordings, which were full of concentration from his younger days, there is more space between the notes here, and the character of each suite emerges more clearly. The supple movements of the dances and the deep resonance of the low strings naturally exude the physicality and free-flowing imagination he gained from working with video production. Avoiding excessive ornamentation or exaggeration, the performance carefully weaves the music's breath, bringing out Bach's structural beauty and spirituality in a rich way. Known as a Grammy-winning work, this is an important culmination that symbolizes his artistic vision.
