Sviatoslav Richter (March 20, 1915 - August 1, 1997) was hailed as the greatest pianist of the 20th century.

Richter's performance of Schumann is perhaps the best guide to listening to Schumann's music. The pieces on this CD, recorded in Mantua in 1986, are all relatively rare pieces that are rarely performed, but they are Richter's stage, illuminating the unique beauty and danger of Schumann's music in its original form, and leaving an aftertaste of the lyrical beauty that overflows from the pieces.
