A heavy instrumental by a group of artisans creating indigenous Jamaican grooves.
This is a masterpiece of instrumental roots music, featuring a heavy one-drop from Soul Syndicate, deep guitar riffs, and the unity of the rhythm section. The dub version is brilliantly executed.
The deep bass and pounding snare create a quietly fiery groove. Earl "Chinna" Smith's guitar strips away the melody, allowing the rhythm to emerge in the empty spaces of sound. The flip side, "Version," is a dub mix by Sylvan Morris, with an impressive sense of space created by the reverb processing. The studio atmosphere is vivid throughout, capturing the precision and tenacious performance of Soul Syndicate as a group of craftsmen. This can be said to be the origin of the refined roots sound that would also be seen in later High Times works.
