Sviatoslav Richter (March 20, 1915 - August 1, 1997) was hailed as the greatest pianist of the 20th century.
The concert will feature three small two-movement sonatas and the "Appassionata" Sonata, an important piece for Richter, who said, "I can't imagine an encore at the end of the program, or after this."
The first and third movements of "Appassionata" are dynamically constructed to evoke stormy passion, while the second movement depicts a clear and peaceful lyricism. Recorded in Amsterdam, October 1992.
