This album features rare live recordings of the transition from bebop to cool jazz, featuring Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker.
The composition is excellent, beginning with a heated exchange of improvisations and transitioning in the second half to meticulous arrangements and restrained performances. Though the recording is mono, the sound image is clear and the instruments are well separated. The touch of the piano and bass is well captured, preserving the vividness of the improvisations of the time. All of the participating members are highly skilled, and the creativity of these young jazz players explodes. The balance of the editing and song selection is also excellent, making this a documentary compilation that allows you to sense the musical transition from bebop to cool jazz.
