This is the debut album of "Lifetime," formed by the genius drummer Tony Williams. It was recorded as a trio with John McLaughlin (guitar) and Larry Young (organ).
This album is extremely cutting-edge, fusing the improvisational qualities of jazz with the volume and energy of rock. Tony Williams' drums go beyond traditional jazz rhythm keeping, inciting the entire ensemble with a polyrhythmic approach. McLaughlin's guitar, intensely distorted, combines the power of rock with the complex phrases of jazz. Young's organ weaves its way through the mix, and the resulting chaotic sound of the three combined to set a decisive course for the fusion scene that followed.
