This masterpiece, centered around piano ballads with a strong jazz flavor and earthy blues, solidified his unique public image as a drunken poet.
This album was Tom Waits' first to chart at No. 89 on the Billboard 200, establishing a commercial foothold. Under the direction of producer Bones Howe, string ensembles and jazz-inspired improvisations were incorporated throughout the album. The raspy vocals and piano composition of "Tom Traubert's Blues" in particular epitomized his style going forward.
