A historic live recording featuring the strongest Stax members who captured the excitement of Black Woodstock.

This important work in soul history captures the 1972 Wattstax Festival, featuring powerful performances by the Staple Singers, Rufus Thomas, and the Bar-Kays in front of an enthusiastic crowd of over 112,000.

This live recording captures the energy of Wattstax, which drew over 110,000 people to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. From the get-go, the Staple Singers' "Respect Yourself" and "I'll Take You There" instantly captivate the audience. Rufus Thomas' "Do the Funky Chicken" follows with a stunning, crowd-pleasing groove, vividly capturing the moment the massive stadium shook. Albert King's sharp blues and the Bar-Kays' funky "Son of Shaft / Feel It" are also powerful, showcasing the richness of the era's black music, from soul to blues to funk. Toward the end, Isaac Hayes envelops the venue with "Theme From Shaft" and "Soulsville," creating a symbolic afterglow of the festival. This work is undeniably valuable as a record of this historic festival featuring the finest performers from Stax.
