A wonderful blend of sensitivity, intelligent humor, and a unique sense of rhythm.
At first listen, Nichols' piano playing seems to be in the context of bebop, but it has complex structures and bold harmonies that go beyond that.
Although he is often compared to Monk, Nichols' music is more lyrical, abstract, and deeply romantic.
