Composer Masahiro Sugaya, who has received significant international acclaim in recent years, has created the stage music "The Zoo at Sea" (1988) for a stage performance by the performing arts group "Pa Tarahumara," of which he was a member at the time, and this is the first-ever reissue of this piece!
The songs have been reissued as individual tracks, including on the Japanese new age/ambient compilation "Kankyo Ongaku" by the US label "Light In The Attic," but this is the first time they have been reissued as an album!
Masahiro Sugaya has been active as a composer since the early 1980s, having studied under such renowned composers as Shigeaki Saegusa, Joji Yuasa, and Teizo Matsumura. He also produced the soundtrack for NHK Educational TV's "Junior High Schooler Diary" and participated as an arranger in the works of the guitar duo "Gontiti." This album was originally produced for the stage performance "The Zoo of the Sea" by the performing arts group "Papa Tarahumara," for which he was a member since 1987, and was originally released only on CD. While utilizing digital instruments such as samplers and synthesizers, the album delivers a warm, organic sound, with tracks like "Sand Grains of the Sea" (M2), which blends delicate piano with soft electronic sounds, and "To the Ends of the World" (M7), from "Horizon Vol.1," which features soft, interwoven minimalist sequences that create a sense of floating. This masterpiece captures the essence of Japanese ambient music, which has been rediscovered worldwide in recent years!
