Toru Takemitsu's avant-garde spirit and tradition confront each other
An experimental musical space where Eastern and Western instruments intertwine.
Conducted by Michiyoshi Inoue, the New Japan Philharmonic performs Toru Takemitsu's "November Steps," showcasing an innovative world in which the traditional instruments of the biwa and shakuhachi interact with the orchestra. The unique tones of Kinshi Tsuruta's biwa and Katsuya Yokoyama's shakuhachi clash with the sound of the Western orchestra, yet still create harmony. The pairing with Yoshinao Nakata's "Hymn of the Non-Religious" is also intriguing, making this a valuable record that demonstrates the diversity of contemporary Japanese music.
