Sviatoslav Richter (March 20, 1915 - August 1, 1997) was hailed as the greatest pianist of the 20th century.

This recording was made in London and Italy around the time Richter, who was known only as a phantom pianist, made his sensational debut in the West. Recorded in London in July 1961 and in Italy in November 1962.
