Exploding with 80s electro vibes, this is dance funk from Bar-Kays' mature period.
This Memphis-based soul/funk group, active since the 1960s, boldly shifts gears to a more digital, programmed sound with this album, packed with the charm of 1980s electro-funk.
In the late '80s, Bar-Kays downsized from a lineup of over ten members to just three: Larry Dodson, Harvey Henderson, and Winston Stewart. Their sound also shifted dramatically, shifting from their traditionally rich funk to a more synth-driven pop/electronic sound. This shift complemented Dodson's distinctive vocals, and the opening track, "Certified True," is a powerful dance track that even evokes a Cameo affinities. The track reached No. 9 on the Billboard R&B chart, and the follow-up, "Don't Hang Up," also charted, helping to fuel the group's later successes. Meanwhile, the rawness of their early funk faded into the background, and the resulting album showcased a sleek production and a distinctly '80s sophistication.
