Her first release after moving to Geffen, this album marks a turning point in 1980, when the Queen of Disco ventured into rock and new wave.
Produced by Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, the album marked a bold shift towards a more rock-influenced sound, with the title track reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and the album reaching number 13 on the Billboard 200.
The geometric synths and sharp guitars that ring out from the beginning of the title track, "The Wanderer," signal a bold shift from traditional disco to a sound with a strong rock influence. Donna Summer's vocals maintain their lustrous quality while also pushing a rock-like power to the forefront, directly competing with the rhythm. As evidenced by the album's #3 ranking on the Billboard Hot 100, this challenge was widely supported. "Cold Love" sees the rugged vocals mesh with the tense performance, and the album as a whole balances the joyousness of dance music with the hard-hitting sound of a band, making it easy to see why it reached #13 on the Billboard 200.
