Szell displays perfect orchestral control in three symphonic poems: "Till Eulenspiegel's Merry Pranks," "Don Juan," and "Death and Transfiguration." The Cleveland Orchestra's technical perfection is astounding, and Strauss's complex orchestration is beautifully organized. Although recorded in 1977, this performance remains a benchmark.
